Story & Recommendation
Heian Raku Ichi Market – A massive crafts market just outside the Heian Jingu Shrine
Held on the second Saturday of every month in the Okazaki Park, Heian Raku Ichi is a market of over 250 stalls selling everything from original hand made crafts, pottery and Japanese knick-knacks to treats and even bonsai trees. With so many different stalls spread across such a large area, this market is a great place to enjoy a fun, lively Saturday morning in Kyoto. Being situated in one of Kyoto's staple tourist spots, Heian Jingu Shrine, means that this market is quite popular with visitors from overseas too. The Heian Raku Ichi market is held only once a month, so if you're thinking about going, then make sure you've got your schedule worked out in advance!

Everything at the Heian Raku Ichi Market is entirely hand made. You can find everything from soft toys stuffed with love to coin purses, bags and other things featuring Japanese designs. If you're looking for unique, thoughtful souvenirs, then this market is a great place to find them.

Pottery
At the Heian Raku Ichi market, you can also find pottery stalls selling handcrafted Japanese dishware, including plates, cups and other little things you don’t often see on western tables. When all set out together, these unique handcrafted pieces of pottery breath life into any dining table, so if you’re looking for something for yourself or someone you known who’s into Japanese pottery, then these stalls are must-sees!

As this is a “handcrafts” market, another highlight is the handmade food! Here you’ll find bread, Japanese sweets, and even hot drinks all made by hand! If you’re feeling a bit peckish after trolling the market all day, then grab a bite to eat and take a seat in the surrounding Okazaki Park.

Benches are placed throughout the Okazaki Park during the market, so grab your friends and family and sit down for a bite to eat and a coffee in the park!
- Manner & Tips -

Crowds gradually start growing after 12 p.m., so if you’re wanting to take a more relaxed look around, then we recommend getting there as early as possible.

The area surrounding the Okazaki Park has quite a few things to see and do, including the Heian Jingu Shrine, Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art and Kyoto City Zoo, so make sure to take a look around after you’re finished at the market.
