Kodai-ji is a temple that enshrines the daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his wife Nene, and at the temple they hold special night entrance events where the temple is illuminated at night in spring, summer, and autumn. In spring and autumn you get to see the temple and the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, respectively, illuminated at night and in summer the fresh greenery is illuminated, making the temple a cool refuge from hot summer days. The refined garden and bamboo grove, the magnificent temple buildings; they are illuminated in an elegantly simple way, which is the reason many people go to see the illumination every year. Koda-ji Temple is also famous for the different 3D projection mapping shows they have every year, where you get to see the combination of historical scenery and the latest technology.

Kodai-ji Temple is widely known to be a great place to see autumn leaves. The pond Garyochi is surrounded by maple trees, and in autumn these trees turn into beautiful shades of yellow and red. The sight of the illuminated autumn leaves and the Kaisan-do Hall is reflected in the pond is really beautiful.

In spring the famous weeping cherry tree of the Hojo Garden is illuminated. In the spring projection mapping show you can enjoy both the projection mapping show at the garden and the cherry tree at the same time.

At Kodai-ji Temple they hold Special Night Entrance events regularly and you can enjoy the seasonal differences. During the high seasons of spring and autumn the event may get crowded, but if you go on a weekday or go late at night you should be able to get around this problem and look at the beautiful scenery in peace. The normal entrance to the temple starts at 9 a.m. In summer the theme is yokai, Japanese demons, and they have exhibitions and a projection mapping show about the Hyakki Yagyo, the “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons.”

Directions From JR or Keihan Kyoto Station: Take Kyoto City Bus #206 and get off at Higashiyama Yasui bus stop, and walk east for five minutes.
Event time From sunset until 10 p.m. (Entrance until 9:30 p.m.) Normal entrance is from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Entrance until 5 p.m.)

Adults: 600 yen, middle school students: 250 yen, groups of over 30 people: 500 yen. *Elementary school students get in for free but need a parent accompanying them.

This temple is in the Higashiyama area where there are many sightseeing spots so many people from the overseas visit it too. The walk from the bus stop is short, but please enjoy the atmospheric sights on the way to the temple.
