Walk on the tracks that used to transport ships on the Keage Incline
The Keage Incline is a two-minute walk from Keage station on the Tozai subway line in Kyoto. The Keage Incline was a canal inclined plane system that helped transport rice, sake and soy sauce to Kyoto from neighboring Shiga prefecture from 1891 to 1948. Since the area is hilly, this inclined plane was built to transport ships. Many tourists visit this area because there are a lot of temples and shrines like Nanzen-ji, Zenrin-ji, and Heian Shrine. Walking on the tracks overgrown with weeds you can feel a relaxed calmness take over. If you go further down the slope you will get to a boat and a cradle that was used to carry the boats up the slope. It is interesting to get to know about the history of the incline. In spring the cherry trees that cover the tracks it feel like you were walking through a cherry blossom tunnel.

Keage Incline is a famous spot for viewing cherry blossoms. In spring many people flock here to see the cherry blossom arches. Even though it can get crowded, the view is worth it. The cherry trees Some people are absorbed in taking photos while others are sitting down relaxing, but this natural artwork is sure to capture your heart.

A Wooden Ship on a Cradle
A reconstructed ship and the cradle used to transport it are displayed on the road to Heian Shrine. There are wooden sake barrels on the ship to make it easier to imagine the kind of work these ships used to do. There is a sign in English about the history of the Keage Incline, so those interested in history should take a break here and read it.

Take a Break and Take in the Scenes
The Keage Incline has a hidden scenic point. When you get to the top of the Incline, look behind! The view is sure to make you happy. Although it is only a 15-minute walk to the top from Keage station, the path is a little rugged so you have earned a break. So sit a bench and admire the view.

Hark! A Water Pipe!
This is an actual water pipe like the ones still used in Kyoto. It is displayed on the square at the top of the slope. Pipes like this one are used to supply water to the people of Kyoto from Lake Biwa. These water pipes are durable, the water is clean and the filtration systems in use are excellent. The water in Kyoto is safe to drink!
