Story & Recommendation
A temple where you can relax while gazing at a beautiful rock garden
Ryoan-ji is a small temple, yet a popular tourist spot located near Kinkaku-ji Temple. Many people visit this temple mostly because of the famous rock garden. The rock garden is a small garden composed of white sand and 15 rocks. An interesting attribute of the rock garden is that it is made in a way that from any angle, you cannot see all 15 rocks. It remains a mystery as to who made this garden and why. However, gazing at the garden is oddly calming and relaxing. In addition, there are wooden buildings filled with history and a beautiful pond surrounded by greenery. We recommend that you visit Ryoan-ji Temple in the morning, sit on one of the benches and think about the day ahead.
The Rock Garden
The garden is fairly small, measuring in at 25 meters by 10 meters. Assembled with 15 rocks and white sand, it is recommend that you also pay special attention to the uniquely-colored earthen walls surrounding the place. Looking at the walls surrounding the garden creates further depth giving the garden an illusion of added length. When you are there, try to count how many stones there are. 15 rocks are placed, however, no matter from what angle the garden is looked at, most people can only see 14 rocks. Who made this garden and why still remains a mystery.
Kuri - The Main Building of the Temple
When walking through the path towards the shrine, this is one of the first buildings you will see. Although it's a simple white-walled building made of wood, it is a dignified and impressive structure. Also, pay attention to the bamboo fence on both sides of the stone steps. The bamboo is expertly used to create a beautiful overall structure.
Look Over Kyoyochi Pond
This pond surrounded by many flowers is spacious, and the trees reflect on it quite beautifully. As you watch the ducks and swans swim, you can also gaze at the mountains behind Ryoan-ji. Just observing the scenery is relaxing. It is recommend that you sit on a bench and just take a moment to take it all in.
- Manner & Tips -
Look at the rock garden from inside the building. Please do not walk on the rock garden. Do not enter restricted areas, and do not eat within the grounds.
