Story & Recommendation
The Sagano District is a picturesque area that was loved by the nobles of ancient Kyoto
Heading north from JR Saga-Arashiyama station or from the Togetsu-kyo Bridge and the bamboo forest area, you will find Sagano. Sagano is as beautiful as Arashiyama and has a lot of nature. It is very popular through the year, and many of those who visit Sagano also go to Gioji Temple and Jojakkoji Temple. You should also look around you when you walk from temple to temple. On the way there is the Saga Torimoto area with thatched roof houses and Hirosawa Pond, a famous moon-viewing spot. This area was loved by many an emperor and also by the nobility. Kyoto has many places you only notice if you go for a walk there. The Sagano area has remained unchanged for hundreds of years, so why not pay a visit, I am sure you will fall in love!

This district is composed of old houses with tiled and thatched roofs. The unique feature of the area is that farmers and worshippers at Atago Shrine, where the god of fire is enshrined, live side by side. There is also the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple that is said to have been started by the monk Kukai to mourn those whose bodies were abandoned out in the open.

Hirosawa Pond

This is one of the three famous ponds in Japan, and its circumference is 1.3 km. It’s located a 10-minute walk to the east from Daikakuji temple. The pond water is used for irrigation and you can see rice paddies near it. The mountain is the picture is called Henjoji mountain, named after Henjo-ji Temple, and it turns into vivid colors in the autumn. A rowboat is available for ¥900/an hour. You can enjoy a wonderful view on it.

Don’t miss the birthplace of red bean paste
Don’t miss the birthplace of red bean paste
Red bean paste is believed to have been made here for the first time in Japan. You get to the birthplace after going through the bamboo forest. Red bean paste, which is called “anko” in Japanese, is often used for Japanese confectionery. It is made by stewing red beans with sugar. Although the area has been vacant for a long time, Kyoto city has started growing red beans in the area again. Soon you may be able to taste the original taste of the red bean paste as it used to be over a thousand years ago.

Get on the Sagano Romantic Train
Get on the Sagano Romantic Train
This scenic train ride from JR Saga-Arashiyama station to Kameoka station takes about 25 minutes one way. The train carts have open sides so you can enjoy the scenery wholeheartedly.
