Story & Recommendation
A Fushimi inn loved by a historical Japanese hero
The Teradaya inn has been operated since the Edo period and is located in the Fushimi area—which historically was a port famous for sake breweries. The inn became a well-known place in connection with Ryoma Sakamoto who was a prominent figure in Japan's modernization and contributed to overthrowing the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 19th century. As he really loved the inn and as it even became the place of his assassination by his political enemy, it has become a mecca for Japanese history buffs. Some marks on the walls made during his assassination still remain. There are also some souvenir shops selling Sakamoto goods in the area, so feel free to have a wonder and pick up some souvenirs on your way.
1Highlight
A Statue of Ryoma Sakamoto
A Statue of Ryoma Sakamoto
This area of the inn was built in 1978 as a garden. Sakamoto often put his left hand into his kimono when he posed for pictures and paintings. That’s because his hand was injured in an attack. This statue was created to reflect such pictures of him.

Pray for Good Relationships
Pray for Good Relationships
When Sakamoto and his wife, O-ryo, met for the first time at Teradaya, it is said that a small shrine in the garden brought luck to their relationship. Pray here yourself and in the near future, your true love might appear.

Fortune-telling Paper in a Vase
Fortune-telling Paper in a Vase
These fortune-telling pieces of paper will tell you how difficult it’ll be for your wishes to come true! Firstly, buy one of the fortune papers for \100 at the entrance, then place it on the water in the vase which holds a mountain of coins. If the paper sinks into the water quickly, your wish may come true shortly. If not, then you just have to pray harder!
- Manner & Tips -
Please do not disturb the atmosphere of the inn or make noise inside.
The artifacts exhibited in each room are fragile, so please be careful.
