The Togetsu-kyo Bridge is the symbol of Arashiyama surrounded by wonderful scenery
Surrounded by wonderful scenery of nature, the Togetsukyo Bridge is one of the symbols of Arashiyama. Here you can listen to the relaxing sound of the river, spot rowing boats, and run into tourists enjoying their rickshaw rides. Although the river that crosses the bridge is one, the names differ splitting the river names into two. Although only one river runs under the bridge, the names differ on each side of the bridge. The river is called “Honzu River” on the west side of the bridge, and “Katsura River” on the east side.
Togetsu-kyo Bridge is one of the Arashiyama area’s main attractions. The bridge's name–which literally means the crossing moon–is said to date back to the Kamakura period when Emperor Kameyama looked at the bridge during a late-night boat ride and said, "On this cloudless night, the full moon seems as if it is crossing the bridge." The Togetsu-kyo Bridge is 155m in length and features wooden balusters that blend into the surroundings and create the bridge’s now-famed Kyoto-esque look.
The View from the Togetsu-kyo Bridge
As one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Kyoto, the view from the Togetsu-kyo Bridge gives you a magnificent look at the Arashiyama mountains. While in spring, the bridge offers an unobstructed view of the cherry blossoms that paint the mountains pink, come autumn, the scenery turns a magnificent deep shade of crimson. The scene created by the combination of the river and mountains is sure to stay with you forever.
Enjoy a snack near the bridge!
Along the banks of the Katsura River, there are benches where you can sit and take in the view while enjoying a snack from the nearby shops in Arashiyama. Whether you're with family or friends, the Togetsu-kyo Bridge is a great spot to sit and relax with something to eat.
