Le Petit Mec Oike

- ル・プチメック御池 -
At Kyoto’s popular bakery Le Petit Mec Oike you can have all kinds of authentic bread for here or to go
In great contrast with the always busy Oike-dori Street, Le Petit Mec Oike is on a narrow, quiet alley. The black walls and the lamps lighting the bakery with their soft, orange light make for stylish and relaxed atmosphere. Le Petit Mec Oike, one of the most famous bakeries in Kyoto, has a completely different ambiance from other bakeries, and many people from all over the country come here in order to taste their bread. Completely different from this ambiance, all of their bread is cute but unpretentious. Their motto is “French fast food,” and they have in their showcases sandwiches with luxurious fillings, crunchy sweet tarts, and tens of other types of bread. They are all alluring and when seeing them I get the urge to buy all of them, from one end to the other. A great thing about this restaurant is that they have terrace seating outside. I want to recommend having some bread and coffee outside on the quiet terrace when the weather is nice and warm. How elegant and luxurious this would be. This bakery is a 5-minute walk from subway Karasuma Oike Station so it’s really easy to get to it. If you are in downtown Kyoto, I hope you will have time to visit the best bakery in Kyoto, Le Petit Mec Oike.
The most popular bread, “Pain au chocolat”
The most popular bread, “Pain au chocolat” / ¥210(+tax)
This is Le Petit Mec Oike’s most popular product, “Pain au chocolat.” Inside the crispy, soft, buttery pastry there is Belgian chocolate by the company Barry Callebaut. There is a little bit of bitterness in the elegantly sweet chocolate and it’s delicious. You will know the reason for their popularity from your first bite.
Le Petit Mec’s famous sandwiches

Le Petit Mec is proud of their famous sandwiches. There are many different kinds of sandwiches on the bakery’s showcase, from ones with thick slices of roast pork to ones with spicy pates, so even just choosing your sandwich is fun. I would like you to buy one of these sandwiches when you first visit the bakery.

Le Petit Mec Oike not only sells breads which are hard outside like their sandwiches, but they also sell sweets like tarts. The weight and hardness of the tart is counterbalanced by the crispy texture and the gentle moistness that remains in your mouth. The buttery tart, sweet custard, and the sour fruits go together really well; they are the best. Buying one for your 3 p.m. snack might be a good idea.

Terrace seating that is especially alluring when the weather is good
There is terrace seating by the bakery where you can eat and drink the bread and drinks you have bought. Having some delicious bread and drinks here on this spacious terrace when the weather is nice would surely be a great experience. If you have some time to spare, I want to recommend you have some bread on the terrace.

Le Petit Oike is close from my home so I sometimes also go there when I’m not working. The terrace area is great for a luxurious breakfast, and when the weather is warm I recommend buying some bread and going to eat it by a river or in a park. This bakery is really famous in Kyoto so I hope you will visit it at least once!
