Story & Recommendation
Fragrant citrus Yumiso in cute pots
The long-standing Yaosan was founded about 300 years ago. Its specialty is Yumiso, which it sells in cute little lemon-shaped pots. Yumiso is a unique condiment made by adding the mother of citrus fruits, citrons, and several other ingredients into miso. It features the rich flavor and aroma of yuzu with refined sweetness. Yumiso goes well on steamed vegetables, rice and bread. You’ll also love the look of the store as it’s kept the same traditional Japanese atmosphere as the day it opened.

Yumiso in a round wooden box
Yumiso in a round wooden box / 130g: ¥900│200g: ¥1,350 (inc. tax)
Packed into a round wooden box, this version of Yaosan’s yumiso is less expensive than the potted one. Yumiso goes well on rice, warm seasonal vegetables and grilled fish. It also goes great on bread in place of jam! Also, as yumiso is quite strong, a little goes a long way. *Best eaten within 30 days of purchasing. Please keep at room temperature.

Yumiso Pot
Yumiso Pot / 60g ¥2,650│220g ¥3,650│510g ¥6,700 (inc. tax)
Yaosan’s potted yumiso comes in a beautiful, eye-catching porcelain jar, and is great as a souvenir or gift. While the potted yumiso lasts longer than its wooden box counterpart, it’s still best eaten with 40 days of opening.

This red miso is used for making red akadashi-miso soup. It’s recommended to store this miso in the refrigerator, but it can also be stored at room temperature. Akadashi-miso is best eaten within five months of purchasing.

Yumiso Pot with an Assortment of Miso
Yumiso Pot with an Assortment of Miso / ¥5,150 (inc. tax)
This assortment of miso includes a pot of yumiso, red miso and white miso and is perfect for those wanting to buy all three of Yaosan’s different miso pastes at once. As the white miso has a relatively short best by date, this set is best for those who plan on eating the miso while in Japan or who can keep the miso chilled while traveling home. Yaosan offers a range of different sized miso assortments. See in store for more details.
How to buy

Please refrain from bringing any food or drinks into the store.

If you are planning on buying 10 or more yumiso pots, please reserve them in advance by either phoning of faxing Yaosan.

- Shopping Tips -

All of Yaosan’s products are susceptible to sped-up fermentation when kept in environments warmer than 25 degrees Celsius. If you are planning on returning home to a warm country, then we recommend getting some ice packs to chill the miso while you travel.

Taste tests are available. Please ask the staff if you’re interested.

We recommend trying all the miso and seeing if it sits well on your palate before purchasing.

Both the interior and exterior of Yaosan provide an amazing sense of the store’s rich history. Its signboard was made Rosanjin Kitaoji, an internationally famous painter and calligrapher. Make sure to give it a look!

*The exterior signboard is a replica of the one displayed inside.
