Asano Nihonshuten is a very casual sake shop with a bar in the middle of Kyoto
Asano Nihonshuten is a sake shop, but not just any sake shop. Asano Nihonshuten is located in the Aeon shopping mall right next to Kyoto Station, so it’s location couldn’t be better. What makes this sake shop special is that it also has a bar counter, where you get to try all kinds of sakes from all over Japan. In fact, if you’re thinking of buying a bottle of sake here, you can have a little taste of the sake for free.
The sake at the shop is tasted by the staff at the sake breweries before they choose to sell it, so you can be sure that whichever sake you choose at the shop, it’s going to be up to Asano Nihonshuten’s strict quality standards.

Amazake tasting set
You get to try three different kinds of amazake, the sweet, quite a thick type of sake that is especially popular among women. This is the sake set for the Instagram generation, and if you show this picture to the staff they should be able to recreate the assortment we have in the picture for you. The green one is nonalcoholic matcha amazake!

Smoked fatty mackerel
The smoked fatty mackerel here is so good that it’s almost a steal at only 350 yen per portion. And the fattiness of the fish makes it go really well with sake. The fatty mackerel here is actually made by a famous izakaya in Kyoto, Sabar, so you can be sure you’re getting the best mackerel possible.

Assortment of three appetizers
You can get an assortment of three appetizers to go with the sake for 500 yen, and in the picture, the assortments are as follows: tofu pickled in sake lees, dried squid with mentaiko, and smoked chicken. They have all of these on sale too, so you can eat them at home with the sake you’re going to buy.
Note that the tofu pickled in sake lees is only available for a limited time.
