Grandir Oike

- GRANDIR 御池店 -
Grandir Oike is a bakery so fashionable in black that it looks almost like a fancy boutique
It is very hard not to notice Grandir Oike; the black look of the bakery looks almost like a boutique in France, although the bakery is located in Kyoto on a small alley by the Kyoto City Hall. Grandir Oike is famous for its bagels and paninis, and the slick look of the bakery uses black in a way that makes the brightly lit bagels and other baked goods look almost like diamonds. They have 15 different types of chewy, crunchy bagels, and they are so popular that if you come in the afternoon they won’t have many left. You can find paninis in the cold section, and after choosing one the staff will grill it so you can eat it piping hot (heating a panini takes 2-3 minutes), and enjoy the hot cheese with the bread. They also sell other baked goods like sandwiches and curry bread, which are all made fresh every day. The bakery is not far from the Kamo River, so you can get some bread here and go have a picnic.
Avocado-ham panini
Avocado-ham panini / ¥460
The freshly baked piping hot fragrant panini, and the ham topped with whipped cream-like avocado, combined with the saltiness of the cheese, makes this panini taste even more delicious and something that is not easy to stop eating once you start. Not many bakeries in Japan grill their paninis like Grandir Oike, so getting to eat a real panini with the slanting grill marks, and after eating one for lunch you can be sure that day is going to be a good one.
Chestnut bagel
Chestnut bagel / ¥160
The bagels are made using natural yeast and the dough is fermented for a long time, then boiled, and lastly, it is baked in an oven, making for an exceptionally chewy and fragrant bagel. The fragrance of wheat and baked bread is joined by crushed chestnut, and when you bite into the bagel you are going to enjoy a completely new texture. Bagels are low in fat and calories, which is why they are so popular among women, and this can also be seen at Grandir Oike; most women put bagels onto their trays.
French cheese bread
3Check it out!
French cheese bread / ¥230
This bread is based on French bread, but it is filled with cheese, and the bread looks cute, almost like an onion. Looking at the overflowing cheese makes you want to bite into the bread right away. Because it is French bread, the crust is hard and crunchy. If you heat the bread and cut it in half, you can see the cheese flowing from inside, and eaten with the slightly salty bread it is a delicacy!

After choosing the taste of the panini, you get to choose a drink. If you get the drink set you don’t only get a drink, you also get a Japanese sweet.

When you want to eat a panini, first choose the one you like, and then have the staff grill it for you. Grilling the panini takes about 2-3 minutes after which it is wrapped in paper and handed to you, and you can enjoy piping hot panini.

When I go to a bakery, I always get bagels, and this bakery’s bagels are great: they are soft but chewy, and when you toast them just a bit they also get crunchy, so I can’t stop eating. Besides the bagels, their French cheese bread is delicious; it has different kinds of cheeses inside it, and the melting, fragrant, strong taste of cheese is something no one can resist! Get some and go have a picnic!
