Story & Recommendation
A Taste you Won’t Forget! White Miso Soft Serve at Hana Ice
Sitting near Tofuku-ji Temple, Hana Ice is known for its very unique flavor of ice cream, white miso. Why does Hana Ice serve this rare flavor of soft serve you ask? It’s because the shopkeeper, Mrs. Hana, was moved by the taste of the white miso she tried in Kyoto. All the soft serve sold at Hana Ice is made by Mrs. Hana herself, and as you can probably guess, she takes her soft serve very seriously. Hana Ice is not only popular with tourists but locals too. This is because Mrs. Hana approaches each new customer like a new friend, and also because of her positive and affectionate personality. We hope that trying Mrs. Hana’s uncompromising soft serve will be an unforgettable memory of your trip to Kyoto.

 Kyoto white miso soft serve
Kyoto White Miso Soft Serve / ¥380
This is Hana Ice's most popular item. Made of soymilk and Kyoto white miso, this soft serve is both low in sugar and sodium, so is actually surprisingly healthy! The well-balanced sweetness of the soymilk and slight saltiness of the white miso gives this soft serve a truly delicious flavor. Not only that, but the ice cream cone has a wee trick up its sleeve to make it go even better with the soft serve as well; it's made of with almonds!

Double soft serve
Double Soft Serve / ¥380
Hana Ice's Double Soft Serve is the store's staple white miso soft serve atop its delicious Uji matcha soft serve. The matcha soft serve uses matcha from Uji City, so it contains a truly rich green tea flavor. If you eat the miso and matcha soft serve separately, you can enjoy their various differences, while eating them together will give you a surprisingly good balance of flavors.

Hana Ice / ¥450
Hana Ice contains a mix of Kyoto white miso, Uji matcha soft serve and even warabi-mochi (jelly-like mochi made from bracken starch, sprinkled with roasted soybean flour). The final layer of ice cream on the bottom, however, can be chosen from three flavors; yuzu-citrus white miso, black sesame white miso, and matcha-azuki red bean. This single-cup has the possibility to introduce you to a world of different flavors.

Kyoto White miso pudding
Kyoto White Miso Pudding / ¥450
Through trial and error, Mrs. Hana came up with this Kyoto white miso pudding that gives even those with milk and egg allergies something to enjoy at the shop. Sitting on top of the pudding is a mix of Uji matcha and Kyoto white miso soft serve. However, if you only want just the pudding without the soft serve, then you can get it for ¥300. We hope that you'll give Mrs. Hana’s lovingly handmade pudding a try!
