Kyoto's 100-year-old premium sugar roasted chestnut shop: Hayashi Manshodo
Located in Shinkyogoku and Shijodori, the 100-year-old Hayashi Manshodo was established in 1874 (7th year of the Meiji period). Different from other stores, its chestnuts are produced in Hebei Province's Qinglong Manchu Autonomous County Qinhuangdao City and are known as "Hebei chestnuts." Hebei chestnuts are sweet, delicious and nutritious. The chestnut has an astringent skin (namely the outer crust and thin skin around the pulp) can be easily peeled so they are suitable for frying with sugar. The shop's chestnut wok with more than 80 years' history is still simmering every day. From a distance, you can smell the burst of sugar roasted chestnut fragrance, which is very alluring. And the store never sells leftover chestnuts. Everything is sold on the day of production in order to maintain its quality. In addition to roasted chestnuts, chestnut ice cream, chestnut biscuits, and chestnut candy products are sold. This premium chestnut shop with its long history is sure to make you raise your thumb and praise its deliciousness!
Chestnuts in a paper bag
Chestnuts in a paper bag / Starting from ¥600 and up (Including tax)
The shop’s signature item is its chestnuts which are sold in a paper bag. They’re cooked using a traditional cooking technique to preserve the natural sweetness in them. But the fragrance is the most mouth-watering part of them! You can get either normal chestnuts starting at the price of 600 yen for 150 grams, or you can get big, premium chestnuts that start at 650 yen for the same amount.
Sweet chestnut candy
Sweet chestnut candy / ¥310 per bag (Including tax)
Carefully chosen large sugary chestnuts are mixed with the finest sugar and then simmered, allowing the chestnuts to absorb the syrup. This makes the chestnuts soft and sweet. Have them with coffee, tea, or whisky and you have the perfect Japanese afternoon tea combination at your hands!
Masho-yaki chestnut biscuits

The main ingredients of these biscuits are chestnuts and sesame seeds. The surface of the biscuit is slightly hard because they’re handbaked. But when you chew it, you gradually get the layered teste of the sesame seeds, chestnut, and sugar. This is a great snack to have when sightseeing in Kyoto!
Chestnut ice cream (crunchy or smooth)

Chestnut ice cream (crunchy or smooth) / ¥310 (Including tax)
Crunchy chestnuts and chestnut paste are paired with milky vanilla ice cream. The interweaving of the two flavors takes the ice cream experience to the highest realm of deliciousness. The granularity of the chestnuts offers a unique texture, while the chestnut paste with ice cream reminds you of eating a Mont Blanc cake.

Every time I pass by this shop, I’m always attracted by the smell of roasted sugary chestnuts. These chestnuts can be easily peeled and their sweetness and taste are just right. In addition, I would strongly recommend the chestnut paste ice cream! The taste is just like eating Mont Blanc cake ice cream! It makes a pleasant after-dinner dessert!
