Story & Recommendation
Matcha Republic – A New Way to Experience Matcha!
While matcha in Kyoto has the image of traditional Japanese shops, Matcha Republic opts for a more western, modern look with its eye-catching white and gold design. Matcha Republic and its whole vibe is one thing, but its drinks are really where it's at. This shop's actually a place for an Uji matcha specialty store to trial their new products, so you can get a range of matcha-based drinks made from freshly ground matcha. The drinks at Matcha Republic all contain matcha and are entirely unique! If you're looking to try a new and exciting take on matcha, then Matcha Republic is definitely somewhere you have to check out!

Matcha ink – matcha latte
Matcha Ink – Matcha Latte / ¥590
Matcha Republic's matcha latte is served in an unusual ink bottle-shaped container. This very cool bottle not only looks like a real ink bottle but is even made out of glass too. Thanks to its cute design, the bottles have garnered a huge amount of attention and there's always people snapping pictures outside Matcha Republic. However, these bottles aren't the only thing worthwhile about these matcha lattes. As Matcha Republic uses freshly ground Uji matcha, they also give you that wonderful "matcha flavor" and taste fantastic too. Matcha Republic also has three types of Matcha Ink drinks; Matcha Latte, Matcha Green Tea and Matcha Zenzai. As these bottles have caps, they can also be great souvenirs too.

Rock salt cheese matcha latte
Rock Salt Cheese Matcha Latte / ¥640 *Pictured above is a Medium
Matcha Republic's Rock Salt Cheese Matcha Latte is just that, Uji matcha with rock salt and cream cheese. As this is a truly unique drink you'll only find here, we highly recommend giving it a try. On top of Uji matcha green tea, you'll find a dollop of thick cream cheese “crema.” The cream cheese crema also contains whipped cream so it has this lovely thick, smooth texture. The crema is so thick in fact that this drink almost feels like a dessert made of cream cheese and matcha. However, the slightly salty rock salt adds a nice accent that balances the whole thing out. On top of the drink you'll also find a picture of a Ho-Oh phoenix, which is a reference to the two phoenixes that sit atop the Byodo-in Temple, a famous nearby temple in Uji. This little addition makes this drink a must-try when visiting Uji.

Matcha soda
Matcha Soda / ¥480 *Pictured above is a Medium
This is Matcha Republic's Matcha Soda, a drink you don’t find often at other shops. As the combination of matcha and soda is rare, the flavor of this drink is pretty unimaginable. So we were pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. The refreshing flavor of matcha with the fizzy soda pairs well and manages not to feel like some odd mismatch. This drink also contains small bits of dried lemon which give it a refreshing aftertaste and make it slightly easier to drink. As it's not too fizzy nor too sweet and has a wonderfully light flavor, this drink's likable by pretty much anyone. If you're not a fan of overly sweet drinks, then this is definitely something for you.

Matcha Cremia
Matcha Cremia / ¥580
Matcha Republic isn't just about matcha flavored drinks, they also serve the ultimate premium matcha soft serve. This Matcha Cremia is made by sprinkling a premium Cremia soft serve with high-grade Uji matcha. The creamy flavor of the sweet milk in the soft serve and the slightly bitter matcha make for a match made in heaven. While the soft serve has a relatively rich flavor, it features an aftertaste that neither lingers too long nor comes on too strong. The cone is actually made of buttery French cat’s tongue cookie dough, which is just the icing on this elegant soft serve cake.

You can also get drinks to go. When you do, Matcha Republic will give you this easy to carry, snazzy cup holder too. This kind of cup holder isn't something you see very often and is pretty cool looking.
Also, not only is it fashionable but it's also practical too, as you can see which drink is which since the bottom side of the drinks isn't covered.
If the weather's nice, pick yourself up some matcha drinks before heading to explore the rest of Uji!
