Story & Recommendation
Sin an ju – Milky Bubble Tea that’s both Delicious and Photogenic
Located in Kyoto’s ever so trendy Teramachi Shopping Arcade, Sin an ju is a Japanese bubble tea store that recently opened its doors in May of 2019. With shining sea horses on their bottles and secret recipe bubble teas, Sin an ju have managed to attract hordes of young girls willing to queue for as long as it takes to get their hands on this trendy beverage. Sin an ju import their bubble tea, known in Japan as “tapioca,” directly from Taiwan. And in store they bottle and use only the amount they’ll need for the day. Sin an ju’s signature drink is their “Brown sugar bubble milk,” which features coral-like webs of brown sugar syrup coating the inside of the cup. Boiled together with a blend of specialty brown sugar, Sin an ju’s original tapioca pearls simply burst with sugary goodness. As Sin an ju cook their tapioca in-store, the pearls feature a fantastic firm and chewy texture. The teas used at Sin an ju are made from specialty tea leaves sourced from around the world and were decided upon after much discussion with experts in black tea. The addition of milk to the strong, espresso-like extracted black tea brings out both the flavors and aromas of the leaves. As the teas are made with creamy, high-fat milk, they give off wonderful full-bodied flavors, similar to royal milk tea. In this article, we showcase bubble teas using “brown sugar tapioca.” These are Sin an ju original tapioca pearls, which have been boiled in brown sugar. Drinks that contain these tapioca pearls can’t be customized to change the sweetness, amount of ice, or toppings. The lack of customization is in order to get the most out of the sweet flavors and chewy textures of the tapioca. However, all other drinks are customizable. With customizable drinks, you can choose your desired sweetness and amount of ice, as well as add toppings such as Aloe vera and “cheese foam milk.” Have fun mixing, matching and customizing your bubble tea and see what kind of altogether over the top drink you can make.

Matcha Brown Sugar Bubble Milk
Matcha Brown Sugar Bubble Milk / ¥680/M, ¥780/L (Inc. Tax)
Using Kyoto’s famous Uji matcha, Sin an ju’s Matcha Brown Sugar Bubble Milk is exclusive to their Kyoto Teramachi store. The mildly bitter matcha manages to pack a powerful punch that stands firm against the creaminess of the high-fat milk. The matcha is whisked separately from the black tea used in the drink, which gives it it’s notably robust flavors. The drink itself is separated into three distinct layers, brown sugar syrup, matcha, and milk. So depending on where you stab your straw, you’ll get entirely different flavors. If you want to enjoy Kyoto’s iconic Uji matcha while paired with the fun of bubble tea, then this drink is for you. As this drink uses Sin an ju’s “brown sugar tapioca,” you can’t adjust the sweetness and amount of ice used.

Brown Sugar Roasted Green Milk Tea
Brown Sugar Roasted Green Milk Tea / ¥560/M, ¥700 /L (Inc. Tax)
The Brown Sugar Roasted Green Milk Tea provides you with the best and cleanest flavors of Sin an ju’s signature brown sugar tapioca pearls. The roasted green tea has a full-bodied aroma and lacks any bitter or harsh flavors. This lack of bitterness makes this bubble tea an excellent option for children. As the black tea used is a creamy royal milk tea, this drink also feels like you’re drinking a dessert. In addition to roasted green tea, Sin an ju also offers “loole condor”, “uba” and “iron” milk teas. As this drink uses Sin an ju’s “brown sugar tapioca,” you can’t adjust the sweetness and amount of ice used.

As reflected in the prices above, you can choose to get this drink in a capped bottle for an extra ¥150 (Inc. Tax).
