If you want to buy good quality clothes made in Japan, I recommend URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO!
The concept of URBAN RESEARCH is “Unique clothes for urban people” and they say they are not only offering clothes but a life style, and they choose and “edit” their lineup to fit this concept. URBAN RESEARCH is a “select shop,” a Japanese term meaning a clothing store that carries clothes from different, often imported, brands. Customers of all ages shop at this store, but it’s especially popular among men and women in their twenties. The store looks really fashionable with Japanese brands, designer brands, and refined bags and other items on display. They sell clothing from casual things you can use daily to more dressy pieces, so you can put together your whole wardrobe with clothes from URBAN RESEARCH. Among URBAN RESEARCH stores, their Kyoto store not only sells men’s and women’s clothes but they also have things that can only be found in Kyoto on the basement floor. All of the products born from the collaboration project “JAPAN MADE PROJECT” between URBAN RESEARCH and traditional Japanese industries from all over Japan are unique. The basement with its unique charm is a place I recommend you see at least once if you visit the Kyoto store. URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO has a different atmosphere from other URBAN RESEARCH stores, and they sell many items that can only be bought in Kyoto. The store is inside the Teramachi Shopping arcade, so access is easy. I hope you’ll enjoy shopping at URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO!

The first floor of the store is men’s clothes. They sell clothes made from collaboration efforts by URBAN RESEARCH and Japanese companies and the newest foreign brands, so they carry all kinds of clothes. To those moments when you want to be stylish, to when you want to dress down, these clothes can fit any situation.

At the basement of URBAN RESEARCCH you won’t only find clothes but you will also find the new appeal of Japanese craftsmanship. In the basement they also sell pottery, tableware, and other things born of collaboration projects between URBAN RESEARCH and Japanese companies. They keep trying to find the “Good Japanese things” again, and together strive to make new products. Products born from these efforts have a unique feeling. This space is full of Japanese charm that can only be found in Kyoto.

The second floor is women’s clothing. They sell clothing from things you can wear every day to chic and tight, all their clothes are mature and stylish while at the same time casual. I also want to recommend their smartphone cases and bags. Their clothes of many types are all alluring with their simple designs.

One other charming point about URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO is that they have a café inside the shop, and I’m pretty sure there are no other places like this. My recommendation is the pound cake (quatre-quarts) with chocolate sauce. Castella sponge cake like small round cakes are topped with sweet soft serve and chocolate sauce. The cakes are bite-sized and prized reasonably, so how about taking a break from shopping here?

These tenugui towels in this picture are the results of a collaboration project with Tatematsuru, a souvenir manufacturer and reseller from Nagasaki. These are sold on the basement floor and the illustrations on them are retro and cute.

URBAN RESEARCH KYOTO is as a shop more interesting than you would first think. The basement is where it's at in this shop, they have everything from Japanese skateboards to clothes for fishermen. I especially liked the fishing clothes; I'm sure to buy them here if I ever get the urge to start working on a fishing boat. And the best part? Most of the things in the basement are made in Japan!
