Story & Recommendation
A stylish café where you can enjoy sweets while you gaze at art Cafe

This CAFE is brought to you by Umezono, an established sweet shop in Kyoto. While the exterior looks like a traditional “machiya” residence from Kyoto, the interior is done up in a stylish manner with rich wood accents. The neat dining space is always bustling with female patrons who come to enjoy Umezono’s signature mitarashi-dango dumplings, sweets made with green tea, and syrup-covered bean jam. There are some sizeable offerings on the menu, so we recommend going on an empty stomach to eat to your heart’s content. The second floor serves as a small gallery featuring the works of various artists. You can enjoy both sweets and art in one place!

Mitarashi-dango (set of five skewers)
Mitarashi-dango (set of five skewers) / ¥480 (Inc. tax)

This snack continues to be prepared the same way it was when the shop was founded. The dumplings have a toothy texture and are slathered in sweet syrup, making for a delicious repast! They’re all cut in bite-sized pieces, too.

Green tea pancakes
Green tea pancakes / ¥1,050 (Inc. tax)

Made with green tea from Uji, a famous tea-producing region in Kyoto. The gentle sweetness of brown sugar butter enhances them further. These take about fifteen minutes to prepare, so you should order early.

Karinto (black sesame flavor)
Karinto (black sesame flavor) / ¥250 (Inc. tax)

These are the cut-off ends of mitarashi dango dumplings that have then been fried to perfection. They are finished with sugar and sesame alone, making for a light taste. They keep for one week at room temperature.

How to Order

The green tea pancakes take about fifteen minutes to prepare, so you should order them early. If you want something more filling, opt for a set of mitarashi dango with powdered green tea mochi, syrup-covered bean jam, or another house specialty.

- Order Tips -

Add three mitarashi-dango skewers to your order of a green tea pancake for ¥300.
