Story & Recommendation
Real coffee by Fushimi Inari Shrine at Vermillion - cafe.
When it comes to cafes or restaurants right next to sightseeing spots, you tend to not expect too much. Usually, if the food you get is not bad, you’ve found a great spot. But Vermillion - cafe. is not like what you’d expect; the food, and especially the coffee, is beyond excellent. They’ve put a lot of thought into the coffee here; they especially order a special blend of coffee from one of Kyoto’s hippest coffee roasters, WEEKENDERS COFFEE, which the owner of this coffee roaster has made especially to fit Vermillion. The coffee here doesn’t have any of that overpowering sourness many Japanese coffees have, but it has a nice, dark-chocolate-like depth to the taste.

Vermillion plate

There is a real demand for brunch by Fushimi Inari Shrine: as the shrine gets more and more popular, you have to go earlier and earlier to it if you want to miss the crowds. So you may have to skip breakfast and go for a brunch, and if you do this, make sure you make a stop at Vermillion - cafe.

Matcha latte
Matcha latte / ¥500 (+tax)
The matcha latte here has a rich, creamy taste, helped by the little bit of honey in it. It’s not too sweet, however and finds a nice balance between the sweetness and the slight bitterness of matcha. The latte art is also cool (and green)!

Matcha ganache
Matcha ganache / ¥680 (+tax)
This rich and creamy ganache cake is a hit; it tastes almost like you were eating melted matcha chocolate. Also, note the vermilion torii gate on the whipped cream. Highly recommended if you’ve already had your breakfast and just want something sweet to have with your drink.

The souvenirs sold here are designed in-house, and they feature the torii gates of Fushimi Inari on them very prominently. So buy a fan and play maiko, or just get a hand towel to remind of your trip to see the thousand torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine.
