Story & Recommendation
Eel hot pot dish with a rich broth flavor, served at a 400-year-old restaurant
Approximately a 3-minute walk from Shichijo Station on the Keihan Railway. Across from the national treasure Sanjusangendo, there is a restaurant specializing in eel stew called Warajiya. This place was founded in 1624. It is a long-established restaurant that has kept its taste for a long time. The name of the restaurant comes from an episode of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a shogun during the Warring States "Sengoku" period. It is said that every time Hideyoshi came to see the construction of the Great Buddha at Hokoji Temple near the store, he would take off his waraji (traditional Japanese straw sandals) at this store and take a rest, hence the name "Warajiya". As a long-established restaurant that has been in business for hundreds of years, the building has a unique atmosphere and refined appearance. Just looking at the courtyard is enough to experience a Kyoto-like atmosphere. The word "kan-kaku" on the restaurant's noren (curtain) represents the Japanese proverb, a person who has burned the inside of his mouth from eating hot food and stubbornly tries to cool it down by blowing on the cold food as well, in a fit of anger. The concept of "Warajiya" as expressed in the words of the noren is to "keep the taste of the food served at Warajiya the same with persistence and to make it memorable in the hearts and memories of our customers. Please enjoy a hot pot and rice porridge with plenty of fragrant grilled eel at Warajiya, where such thoughts and Kyoto's long history are engraved.
