Story & Recommendation
Dynamic and humorous Oni dance at the Setsubun festival
Setsubun events are held on February 3rd, and one of the highlights is undoubtedly the Oni dance which starts at 3 p.m. at Rozan-ji Temple. Red “Oni” demon who has a sword, blue Oni who has an ax, and black Oni who has a hammer appear on the stage in front of the main hall and they come into the hall while dancing. A ritual to repel bad spirits and for a long life takes place in the hall. Red, blue, and black Oni try to prevent that ritual, but they are warded off by throwing beans at them, rice cake, and so on. Rozan-ji Temple’s beans are unique, as they are covered with red or white color sugar, and are said to help you live long. Approximately 1000 people come to Rozan-ji Temple for this event every year.
