Story & Recommendation
A temple where you can relax while gazing at a beautiful rock garden
Ryoan-ji is a small temple, yet a popular tourist spot located near Kinkaku-ji Temple. Many people visit this temple mostly because of the famous rock garden. The rock garden is a small garden composed of white sand and 15 rocks. An interesting attribute of the rock garden is that it is made in a way that from any angle, you cannot see all 15 rocks. It remains a mystery as to who made this garden and why. However, gazing at the garden is oddly calming and relaxing. In addition, there are wooden buildings filled with history and a beautiful pond surrounded by greenery. We recommend that you visit Ryoan-ji Temple in the morning, sit on one of the benches and think about the day ahead.

You need about 30 to 40 minutes for a visit. In the morning, you can take your time and avoid the crowd. Many people like to visit during weekend afternoons and during high seasons of spring and fall.
