Story & Recommendation
Enjoy the beauty of Fushimi from the Fushimi Jikkokubune Boat Cruise
Back in the olden days, Kyoto's Fushimi Ward, famous for its many sake breweries, needed a way to carry cargo and passengers between them and Osaka.
That's where these unique flatbottomed jikkokubune boats come it. Used all the way back in the Edo period up until the turn of the century in the late Meiji era, these boats were what kept business flowing between the two growing metropolises.
Nowadays, these cargo boats turned tourist cruise run between spring and autumn and give people the opportunity to see the magnificent sake breweries and beautiful scenery of the Fushimi area all from the comfort of a riverboat cruise.
With cherry blossoms in spring, newly grown green leaves in summer, and the crimson red leaves of autumn, these boat rides offer something new to look forward to every season.
While in Kyoto, if you're planning on visiting any of the historic breweries in Fushimi, then take the opportunity to experience one of these lovely boat rides as well.
1Highlight
Breath-taking Riverside Scenery
Breath-taking Riverside Scenery
As you head down the canal, you'll be treated to a tunnel of beautiful greenery on both sides of the river. In spring, the riverside turns a breath-taking pastel color as the area fills with cherry blossoms, in summer, the petals fall away to make way for freshly grown green leaves, and in autumn, those leaves begin to wilt and lose their color, creating an astonishing scene of fiery red autumn leaves.
2Highlight
Mito Komon lock gates
Mito Komon Lock
During repairs of the Uji River in 1929, these locks were built to reorganize the boat lines between the Fushimi harbor and the Uji River. Now, while these locks have become a landmark of the Fushimi area, they also still serve their original purpose of raising and lower water levels to help boats go up and down the uneven canals.
3Good Experiences
Enjoy Fushimi both on and off the boat
Enjoy Fushimi both on and off the boat
From the boat, you get to see some of the Fushimi Ward's most famous sights, including the Geikkeikan Brewery, the infamous Terada-ya inn and the confluence where the Biwako Canal and Takase River meet. The driver of the boat only speaks Japanese, but the beauty of the river will more than make up for any of the explanations you may miss. Also, don't forget to keep your shutter finger ready!
4Good Experiences
Mito Komon Museum
Mito Komon Museum
The old control room of the lock is now a museum. Inside, you can learn about both the lock and the canals that lead up to it. There's also a model of the Fushimi area during the Edo period, so you'll be able to take a short trip back in time at this museum too. Although the museum isn't very big, it teaches you a lot about the area which you otherwise probably wouldn't have learned.
