Story & Recommendation
Patisserie Karan is a cake shop loved by those in the know
Patisserie Karan is a cake shop in the Nishigamo area of Kyoto selling cakes, cookies, French madeleines, and other baked goods. They are most famous for their “Nishigamo Cheese,” a soft cotton cheesecake. The shop is in a residential area a bit far from Kyoto Station, a 50-minute bus ride to be exact, but still many people go to this shop every day to buy their cheesecakes. Inside the cozy shop, you can, of course, see cheesecakes, but also cookies, rolled cakes, pies, and all kinds of baked goods, so just being here is enough to make one’s sweet tooth ache. Behind the showcase, you can see the kitchen where the magic happens and most of the things sold in this cake shop are made. It is my heartfelt wish that you too will find the warmth and love of this cake shop when in Kyoto.

Nishigamo Cheese
Nishigamo Cheese / ¥108
If you go to Patisserie Karan you have to have this cheesecake, Nishigamo Cheese. This chiffon type soft cheesecake just melts in your mouth. This soft cotton texture is the reason for this cakes popularity, and it is made possible by combining two kinds of cheeses and by the way all of the cakes are carefully baked. These cakes need to be eaten soon, and they need to be refrigerated, so they don’t make good souvenirs, but make for exceptionally nice snacks.

Chocolate Soufflé
Chocolate Soufflé / ¥125
Besides the basic Nishigamo Cheese, they also have four additional flavors. One of them is this Chocolate Souffle, which has a strong, rich taste of ganache, but is still very airy. Besides this, they also sell a matcha cheesecake which tastes surprisingly good, and a pound cake which combines chocolate with oranges.

French Madeleine Mountain
French Madeleine Mountain / ¥135
Among their many baked goods this madeleine is one of the most popular. The cake is made to look like the mountain Funayama which is in Nishigamo, and this is why the cake is called “French Madeleine Mountain.” This cake is popular because of its softness and its buttery sweetness.

You can see all kinds of colorful cakes in the showcase. The cakes change seasonally, like in summer they have peach cakes and in autumn they have Mont Blanc cakes.
How to buy

how to buy - Patisserie Karan

You can buy a box of Nishigamo Cheese and Chocolate Souffle cakes, and choose how many you want of each cake. The box sizes are as follows: for 10, 15, 20, and 30 cakes respectively.

- Shopping Tips -

Note that their main product, Nishigamo Cheese, has to be eaten soon. They are good for three days if refrigerated, and for around two hours in the bag you get for free with an ice pack. If you buy a cooler bag they are good for around four to five hours. So they don’t make for good souvenirs to take back home but are great if you eat them right away or take them to your hotel fridge in the cooler bag.

The cakes may not have a long best before date, but the cookies do, so if you want some souvenirs, get cookies!
